LoveStruck: StoryCorps Clips, 30 Quotes and a Song for Valentine's Day

This morning we listened to an inspiring, beautifully moving tribute to love on Democracy Now! Guest David Isay, who founded the brilliant StoryCorps oral history project, shared a handful of thoughtfully curated stories from his new book that speak to a deep love among everyday people.

I've got big love for the project and gently nudge you all to dig in and listen... and maybe even go out and find a StoryCorps recording booth to share your own story, like Danny and Annie did (below). What a beautifully honest, courageous and romantic love!

For the deep love beyond romance, I gathered some favorite quotes on the revolutionary kind. Afterall, love is... everything.

Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place. ― Zora Neale Hurston

Never forget that justice is what love looks like in public. ― Cornel West

Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love. ― Mother Teresa

If I were really asked to define myself, I wouldn’t start with race; I wouldn’t start with blackness; I wouldn’t start with gender; I wouldn’t start with feminism. I would start with stripping down to what fundamentally informs my life, which is that I’m a seeker on the path. I think of feminism, and I think of anti-racist struggles as part of it. But where I stand spiritually is, steadfastly, on a path about love. ― bell hooks

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage. ― Lao Tzu

Love takes off the masks we fear we cannot live without and know we cannot live within. ― James Baldwin

I have decided to stick to love... hate is too great a burden to bear. ― Martin Luther King Jr.

When I say it's you I like, I'm talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed. ― Fred Rogers

Of all forms of caution, caution in love is perhaps the most fatal to true happiness. ― Bertrand Russell

Love is an action, never simply a feeling. ― bell hooks

Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind. ― William Shakespeare

One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: That word is love. ― Sophocles

There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people. ― Vincent van Gogh

The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them. ― Thomas Merton

For one human being to love another human being: that is perhaps the most difficult task that has been given to us, the ultimate, the final problem and proof, the work for which all other work is merely preparation. ― Rainer Maria Rilke

There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness. ― Friedrich Nietzsche
